World Banknote Grading uses a painstakingly refined and modified Sheldon 70 Point Grading System to assign a reproducible and consistent final number to each note graded. World Banknote Grading integrity is our commitment and pledge to the numismatic community. Consistent accuracy defines our paper money grading criteria and scale. Banknotes are protected from handling, moisture and other types of outside contamination. We have simplified the process and cost options for submitting your notes to be graded. Grading fees are as low as $25 per note, plus shipping. World Banknote Grading adds more to its label than just country, denomination, date, serial number, catalog number, and grade. We also add exact dates if known, signature identification whenever possible, printer, and other specific characteristics beneficial to improved attribution. We use an extensive reference collection of banknotes from almost 300 existing and obsolete countries as well as books, periodicals, and other research material to verify each note.
Per una banconota per ottenere il massimo punteggio, essa deve soddisfare criteri molto rigorosi riguardo a centering, margini, condizioni della carta e assenza di tracce di manipolazione.
| Range | Descrizione essenziale |
|---|---|
| 70 | The highest grade assigned. Notes must have no evidence of handling visible at 5x magnification. The margins and registration must appear centered to the unaided eye. A perfectly preserved note, never mishandled by the issuing authority, a bank teller, the public or a collector. An uncirculated note will have its original natural sheen. For a banknote to grade 70, it must be perfectly centered to the unaided eye with full margins for the issue; the registration must also be aligned perfectly. There cannot be any handling marks or imperfections in the print quality of the entirety of the banknote. |
| 69-65 | This note is nearly visually indistinguishable from a 70 but the margins and registration may appear slightly off center. The grade of 69 will be applied to banknotes that are visibly the slightest bit misaligned that they just miss perfection for a 70. A 68 will be assigned to a banknote that has full margins for the issue and is slightly off center; slight shift of the registration is also allowed. For a banknote to grade 67 it must have pleasing centering that is not too far out of alignment and boast full margins. A Gem 66 will have pleasing centering that is slightly more out of alignment than a 67, but the margins must still be full for the issue. A grade of 65 requires a banknote to have full margins for the issue and reasonable centering. It will be visibly off but not to such a distracting level that the edge of one margin comes too close to the frame of the design. A perfectly preserved note, never mishandled by the issuing authority, a bank teller, the public or a collector. |
| 64-61 | The centering is off on one or two sides. The centering is imperfect and the design may be flat. A note is strictly uncirculated but may have minor-to-moderate handling and/or corner tip issues. There will be no folds, however. A 64 will have out-of-alignment margins and they may not be full for the issue. More handling is allowed here - for example, a corner could be lightly bent, or there could be a heavier crinkle that is distracting to the eye. A banknote will be graded 63 when the margins are considerably out of alignment and they need not be full for the issue. Yet more handling is allowed here, a corner tip fold well outside the design, or a slightly heavier bend are also allowed. The typical 62 will be a strictly uncirculated banknote that has poor centering where there is no margin on one side and the design is interrupted. A corner tip fold or two not extending into the design, or slightly more serious minor issues such as foxing, a couple tiny margin tears, etc. could also garner this grade. A 61 grade is not often encountered. However, when this grade is earned it will usually be found on a strictly uncirculated banknote with more serious issues that don’t quite warrant a comment on the label. |
| 60-50 | 60-70 Uncirculated - No evidence of handling, creases, soiling. 50-59 About Uncirculated - Has some very light corner creases or fold. The typical 58 will have a vertical fold or a single corner fold into the design of the banknote. A typical 55 will either be a banknote with a horizontal fold or a harder vertical fold. The most common way to arrive at a 50 is a Choice XF banknote where the folds present are light, and the wear is minimal, making the eye appeal that of an About Uncirculated banknote. Surface is clean and bright with original sheen. A very attractive note, with light handling. May have a maximum of three light folds or one crease. |
| 49-20 | 40-49 Extremely Fine - Normal handling and also circulation marks but, all ink present. 20-39 Very Fine - Some soiling, lack of crispiness, minor loss of ink. Grades in the circulated range take into account the severity of folds/bends, ink loss, overall eye appeal, etc. The typical 45 will have three moderate vertical folds, often referred to as “storage folds”. Most 40s will be notes with “VF folds,” but these folds will be rather light in nature. The typical 20 will retain decent body and have VF folds but may also be moderately crumpled throughout the entire note. |
| 19-4 | 12-19 Fine - Well worn, images hard to see, folds and possible writing. 4-11 Very Good - Banknote is intact. However it has soiling but, ink or paper may be missing. A well-worn and heavily used note. Normal damage from prolonged circulation may include strong multiple folds and creases, stains, pinholes or staple holes, dirt, discolouration, and the note has an overall unattractive appearance. There will be not center hole due to folding. A well-used note, abused but still intact; i.e. no pieces can be missing. |
| 3-1 | 1-3 Poor - Heavy circulation, with heavy wear and tear. A very heavily circulated note with numerous problems. It is totally limp with impaired visual appeal. Grades under 4 Good are generally not collectible unless the note is rare. A dirty and very well-used note. As well as the defects mentioned under the Good category, larger pieces may be half torn off or missing. A note with severe damage because of wear - with staining, pieces missing and graffiti. May have tape holding pieces of the note together. |
An Exceptional Paper Quality (EPQ) note is, in the opinion of PMG graders, completely original. EPQ notes will not have been physically, chemically, o materially processed to give the appearance of a higher grade. Notes exhibiting normal wear-and-tear for their grade are eligible. All notes graded Very Fine 20 and higher will be evaluated per the EPQ designation. Notes must qualify for the EPQ designation to grade Gem Uncirculated 65 and higher. PMG assigns the PMG Star () Designation to notes with exceptional eye appeal for their assigned grade. To receive a from PMG, notes must exhibit exceptionally strong plate and / or overprint embossing, vibrant ink color, and pristine paper quality exceeding the well-established standards used to determine the Exceptional Paper Quality (EPQ) Designation. All US and world notes are automatically evaluated for the distinction of the PMG Star () Designation.
The NET designation indicates a note that has problems that are more severe than can be reflected by the note’s assigned numeric grade. If a note receives the NET designation, the severe problem or problems will be listed. The grade portion of the PMG Guarantee does not apply to Notes given a NET designation by PMG. In some instances, a banknote is impaired enough that a standard numerical grade does not accurately describe the condition of the note. A “DETAILS” grade is assigned if the note exhibits damage or problems exceeding what is expected for any particular grade. The PCGS Banknote Guarantee does not cover the notes given “DETAILS” grades. If the graders determine a “DETAILS” grade is necessary, the note will be assigned a numerical grade based on its attributes independent of the designated problem, and the reasons for the “DETAILS” grade will be clearly noted on the label.
